About
I am driving from Conwy to Azerbaijan in May & June 2009 (here – zoom out for full effect), with friend Richard Jones of Penmaenmawr. The journey will involve 12 to 14 countries (depending on the route we decide on), and approximately 4,500 miles. Yes, for a football match, but going all that way just for a football match, it seemed the least we could do was raise money and donations of “stuff” for charity.
We have joined with the charity Gôl, and their “Baku or Bust” charity run. Gôl are a charity that “every time” Wales play football abroad, raises money for underpriviledged children in the country Wales are playing against. They also donate various sporting kit and monies to youth clubs in Wales. Details of their charity work can be viewed here http://www.golcymru.org – myself and Richard are good friends with the trustees of the charity, and they have a couple of cars joining our mini convoy of 9 cars.
We plan to visit 20 orphanages along the estimated 4,500 mile route (includes various detours).
The charity Gôl are withdrawing all the money we have raised on-line at the end of April to purchase exactly what is needed for these orphanages; from basic medical and hygiene (toothpaste etc) to education books, to clothing and equipment. This is as direct as it gets.
Donation > charity withdraws & buys necessary stuff from list provided by orphanages > we drive it in our cars and deliver en-route to football match. The drive is one way, so the car is also a donation at the end of all this, if it makes it, and we are confident it will…
